Films look at serious topics
Sometimes there’s a joker or two (”Sicko,” “Super Size Me”) tucked into the best documentary deck of Oscar nominees.
Not this year.
All five contenders deal in a straightforward manner with serious, even dire subjects. Meanwhile, foreign film contenders took a subtle approach in works notable for their strong political subtexts.

“Shutter Island” a bleak journey
Martin Scorsese clearly had a ball making “Shutter Island,” which seemingly hurls everything the director knows about filmmaking up on screen in a blazing, masterful technical triumph.
The joy of a boy playing with the world’s greatest electric train set, as Orson Welles memorably described moviemaking, does not necessarily mean a good time for moviegoers, even with Scorsese’s regular screen idol, Leonardo DiCaprio, leading the superb cast.
“Shutter Island” is long and wearying — brilliantly constructed, obsessively detailed, yet dramatically a piece of pulp schlock that’s been overdressed and overstuffed to disguise a ponderous and absurd story.

‘Shutter Island’ tops weekend box office
LOS ANGELES — Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio’s voyage to “Shutter Island'’ has landed them at No. 1 at the weekend box office.
Their creepy crime thriller set at a remote insane asylum opened with $40.2 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. A Paramount Pictures release, “Shutter Island'’ is the fourth collaboration for Scorsese and DiCaprio and the best opening yet for both the director and star.
Scorsese’s previous personal best was $26.9 million with his 2006 Academy Awards champ “The Departed,'’ which also starred DiCaprio. The biggest previous debut for DiCaprio was $30.1 million for 2002’s “Catch Me If You Can.'’

35 Eastwood films in new DVD set
Clint Eastwood has been a towering part of the American movie landscape for more than 50 years. We have watched him evolve from the wide-eyed young cowboy Rowdy Yates on TV’s “Rawhide” to one of Hollywood’s most accomplished directors.
No one has enjoyed watching Eastwood’s rise more than Richard Schickel, Time magazine movie critic since 1972 and producer, director and writer for dozens of documentaries on film history.
“Those of us who knew him from those spaghetti Westerns to where he is today,” Schickel said during a recent phone interview, “that’s one of the most interesting things about his career.”
